Open-Source CRM for AI Agents: What Exists and What’s Missing
Open source is attractive to developer-led teams: no per-seat pricing, full visibility, the freedom to modify. For agent-heavy workloads, the useful question is how much of the agent control layer you would have to build yourself.
What open-source CRMs generally provide
Projects vary, and many are mature and well maintained. Most offer:
- Data models for companies, people and deals.
- REST or GraphQL APIs.
- Role-based permissions designed for humans.
- Self-hosting.
What you may need to add for agents
Most CRMs, open or closed, were designed for human users, so check each project for:
- Agents as distinct identities with named human owners.
- Separate, short-lived credentials per agent that can be revoked on their own.
- Per-agent rate limits and caps on how much an agent can write.
- Database-enforced tenant isolation, if you plan a multi-tenant deployment.
- A per-agent call record and an MCP server.
- Optionally, a way to hold agent changes for human approval.
Building the missing layer
If a project lacks these, expect to build:
- An agent registry with ownership and roles.
- Credential issuing, expiry, rotation and revocation per agent.
- Permission checks on every agent write, in one place.
- Rate limits and daily write caps per agent.
- An MCP server that respects all of the above.
- Tests that prove none of it can be bypassed.
Approval queues are a further project on top, plus ongoing maintenance as upstream changes.
A note on licences
Some open-source CRMs use copyleft licences such as AGPL. Building a hosted product on them carries obligations.
AI PRO CRM is not open source; it is a hosted, closed-source product. It covers part of the list above (agent identities with owners, per-agent credentials, presets, daily write caps, rate limits, forced row-level security and an agent call ledger), but has no approval inbox, and its only agent write is an internal company note.
When open source is still the right call
- You need on-premises deployment for regulatory reasons.
- Your team has spare engineering capacity and enjoys owning infrastructure.
- Your agent workload is small and you can accept manual controls for now.
FAQ
Is AI PRO CRM open source?
No. It is a hosted, closed-source CRM.
Can I self-host AI PRO CRM?
No. It is hosted only. If self-hosting is a hard requirement, an open-source CRM may suit you better.
